  • M & J Roofing Supplies ltd

    Farnborough, 68 Sandy Lane, GU14 9HJ, GB

M&J roofing supplies ltd are a family run business and take pride that we are a local independent. The Bridgman family before setting up a roofing supplies business where originally local contractors. Torch on membranes at this point where very new and as such not available in the UK market. After a trip to a famous German roofing exhibition the owner saw torch on membranes being promoted. From seeing this Michael decided to start buying torch on membranes directly from Italy (world renown for quality roofing and tanking membranes and associated products). Michael was one of, if not the first person to bring torch on the UK. Being a contractor he was using the products himself. However, after being asked continually about the membranes from other roofers Michael decided to start selling torch on membranes to other local roofers. The premises was his garage attached to his house. As demand started to escalate Michaels garage become busier and busier. After a complaint from a neighbour regarding the amount of vans in Michaels road Michael was asked to stop selling goods from his garage by the local council or find a more suitable premises to do so. The Bridgman family stopped contracting, found a local premises in Tongham and thus M&J was born. From these humble grass roots beginnings M&J have built a reputation built on quality products, knowledgeable staff, great pricing points and outstanding customer service within the roofing community. From the original background of being a roofing contractor, Michael understood the need for all staff to have knowledge of roofing as a whole but also to build a very strong base of technical knowledge for all staff. Since its start M&J have been supplying the roofing trade in the south for well over 20 years and will continue to do so. As a family run company we remain proactive to the market, secure stocks of available products especially though the testing times during the covid pandemic. Since the pandemic hit M&J remained open only shutting for 3 days in total. We proved to the market and local trade we are here to help, to keep the country motivated and moving, keeping the economy buoyant, serving the community and securing as much stocks as was possible from all suppliers. All of this was done during one of the most testing times in a generation. Whilst multi nationals remained shut reducing there staff to furlough, whilst other independents shut completely, reduced hours or shut certain branches M&J remained open. M&J and its entire staff are very proud of this fact and continue to serve the local community. Industry leadersWe recently have

Frequently Asked Questions About Roofing Companies

Find answers to common questions about roofing companies and hiring roofing contractors in the UK.

What are the signs that my roof needs to be replaced?

Signs you might need a new roof:
  • Age: If your roof is nearing or exceeding its expected lifespan, it's wise to consider replacement.
  • Multiple Leaks: Several leaks or leaks that reappear after repairs suggest a widespread problem.
  • Extensive Damage: Large areas of damaged, missing, or deteriorated roofing materials might be too costly or difficult to repair effectively.
  • Sagging or Structural Issues: Sagging, deflection, or other structural issues indicate a compromised roof that needs replacement.
  • Granule Loss (Asphalt Shingles): Significant granule loss indicates weathering and reduced protection.
  • Curling or Buckling Shingles: Signifies age or improper ventilation.
  • Increased Energy Bills: A poorly insulated roof can lead to higher heating and cooling costs.
If you're unsure, a professional roof inspection can help determine if replacement is necessary.

How can I make my new roof more energy-efficient?

To boost energy efficiency:
  • Choose Reflective Roofing Materials: Opt for light-colored shingles or metal roofing that reflects sunlight and reduces heat absorption.
  • Install Proper Attic Insulation: Adequate insulation prevents heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer.
  • Ensure Adequate Ventilation: Proper attic ventilation allows hot air to escape, reducing cooling costs and extending the lifespan of your roof.
  • Consider a Radiant Barrier: In hot climates, a radiant barrier installed in the attic can reflect heat away from the roof, further reducing cooling needs.
These measures contribute to energy savings, lower utility bills, and a more comfortable living environment.

What questions should I ask a roofing contractor?

Before hiring a roofing contractor, ask:
  • Experience: 'How long have you been in business, and what experience do you have with my type of roof?'
  • Licensing and insurance: 'Are you licensed and insured, and can I see proof of coverage?'
  • Warranties: 'What warranties do you offer on your work and the materials used?'
  • References: 'Can you provide references from past clients?'
  • Project Timeline: 'What is the estimated timeline for completing the project?'
  • Payment Terms: 'What are your payment terms, and do you require a deposit?'
  • Communication: 'How will you keep me updated on the project's progress?'
  • Cleanup: 'What steps will you take to protect my property during the project and ensure proper cleanup afterward?'
Asking these questions helps you assess the contractor's professionalism and suitability for your project.

How do I prevent roof damage?

Proactive measures to minimize roof damage:
  • Regular Inspections: Inspect your roof at least twice a year for signs of damage or wear and tear.
  • Gutter Cleaning: Clean gutters and downspouts regularly to prevent clogs and ensure proper drainage.
  • Tree Trimming: Trim overhanging branches to avoid damage from falling debris and reduce shade, preventing moss growth.
  • Proper Ventilation: Ensure good attic ventilation to regulate temperature and moisture.
  • Timely Repairs: Address any damage promptly to prevent escalation.
