West Country Tiling are experienced and reliable roof specialists, based in Somerset and operating throughout the South West of England. We provide a range of roofing services to our clients, including churches, listed buildings and residential homes. We can carry out reroofs, roof repairs, roof tiling, roof slating, roof inspections, roof maintenance, roof repair from storm and wind damage, skylight installation and gutter repairs. As experienced roof specialists, we have significant experience of working with the following roof coverings: Cotswold stone slates, Collyweston stone slates, Hamstone slates, Purbeck stone slates, clay and concrete plain tiles, Welsh slate, Spanish slate, Delabole slate, Westmorland slate, Burlington slate, man-made slates, Cedar and Oak shingles, Clay Pantiles, Clay Double Roman tiles and Lead. All of our master craftsmen serve a formal apprenticeship in roof slating and tiling. Once this three year training is completed, they continue their on-site development working under an experienced master craftsman for several years. During this period they will attend two residential lead-working courses run by the Lead Sheet Association to develop these skills. We prefer our master craftsmen to take ownership of the roof that they are working on and that can only be achieved if they have carried out all of the work – carpentry, roofing and leadwork. This also avoids any overlap of different trades, which can often cause potential weak areas on the roof. Once these first six years of their training has been completed, they will often choose a speciality roof covering, for example stone slate roofing, they can then continue their development of this skillset. We have a very good record of long-term employees, this way we can establish not only excellent site practises but also good site behaviour – something that is very important to our clients. This excellence on-site behaviour is backed up by a professionally operated company with in-house Health & Safety specialists to ensure that your project runs without a hitch. The earlier we are able to start the planning and preparation of your project, the smoother the project can run. So please feel free to contact us to discuss any aspect of your potential roofing project.

Green Roof Installation FAQs

Looking for reliable information about green roof installations? Find answers to common questions and get connected with experienced green roof installers in UK.

What is the difference between a green roof and a roof garden?

The terms 'green roof' and 'roof garden' are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle distinction:
Green Roof: Primarily designed for environmental benefits, such as stormwater management, energy efficiency, and improved air quality. May have limited access and be primarily for aesthetic purposes.
Roof Garden: Primarily designed for recreational use, featuring walkways, seating areas, and a wider variety of plants. Requires more structural support and maintenance.
Essentially, a roof garden is a type of green roof designed for active use, while a green roof may or may not be accessible for recreation.

How much does a green roof cost to install in the UK?

Green roof installation costs in the UK vary based on factors like:
  • Roof size and complexity
  • Type of green roof system (intensive vs. extensive)
  • Plant selection
  • Accessibility of the roof
  • Labor costs in your region
Expect to pay between £60 and £200 per square meter. Contact green roof installers on Roofyng.co.uk for accurate quotes.

How do I water my green roof?

The watering needs of a green roof depend on factors like:
  • Plant selection
  • Climate
  • Season
During establishment, regular watering is crucial. Established roofs might only need watering during dry spells. Options include:
  • Manual watering
  • Irrigation systems
Your installer can recommend the best watering approach.

Do green roofs help with stormwater management?

Yes, green roofs are highly effective for stormwater management:
  • Absorption: The growing medium and plants absorb a significant amount of rainwater, reducing the volume of runoff.
  • Retention: Water is retained within the green roof system and released slowly, decreasing the peak flow rate of stormwater discharge.
  • Filtration: The soil and plants act as natural filters, removing pollutants from rainwater.
This helps to alleviate stress on urban drainage systems, reduce flooding, and improve water quality.
